Great question! So it’s not actually released yet, but there’s a game in development called No Man’s Sky — it uses a completely new game engine to generate the world around the player in real-time.

From what I understand the game engine is just given the player’s xyz co-ordinates as input, and returns the world around them. There’s some really good interviews with the developer which you can find on youtube (outside of school!). I’d love to have been involved with NMS because as a physicist and a programmer I enjoy pushing the boundaries of technology, and I’m especially interested in the physics engine in games.

Aside from the cool tech it just sounds awesome as a game too! It’s about space exploration in a massive, randomly generated universe.

If it had to be a game that was already out this question is much harder to answer! Maybe Half-Life 2, because at the time it was made Valve were pushing boundaries with the Source engine, and it stars a theoretical physicist!
