Yes, I really like my work!
I was forced to go abroad (France) to continue to work in science and then I had to quit in order to live with my wife. I worked hard to get back into the academic world while working in the software industry and I am now very happy that we are both working in science and living in the same house.
I’m in my final year now so its pretty tough at the minute, but I have loved doing my PhD and it has given me loads of opportunities like travelling to Europe to give talks and attend conferences and getting involved in public engagement and outreach events. Also being a student for an extra 4 years has meant I can still be on university sports teams and join societies/clubs – and of course I have my student card which gives me discount in all my favourite shops! So the perks are pretty good 😛
Yes 🙂
I’m saying I don’t have bad days, but on average I think my work is pretty good. My experience of working in research is it’s a pretty relaxed atmosphere (I imagine working in a law firm or as an accountant would be much more stressful). and everyone is pretty interested in their work and motivated so there is generally a positive atmosphere at work which is nice. and of course, I am also interested in the work I am doing.
I think my favourite thing is that, since there will always be unanswered questions, I can’t see how you can ever get bored…
