I like describe my work and talk about physics to the public and to student in particular. This competition is one of the best way to do outreach activities so I signed up.

I work with schools every now and again and I love talking to young people about my work. I didn’t like science at school so I wanted to use what I have learnt to inspire more people to get back in to science and give it a go! I thought this would be a good way of testing my knowledge and also learn some new things from all the interesting questions you’re all asking 🙂

When I was at school and was interested in science and engineering, my teacher’s didn’t really know how to help or what to advise me to do. I think having something like this would have been interesting.
Also – some of your questions are amazing. Someone just asked about my opinion on head transplants – really got me thinking…

I like talking, especially about my work!

I think it’s really important to talk to people when you’re a scientist — quite often people have a bad impression of what scientists do, or what our motivations are from films and other media, so it’s nice to get the chance to talk to people and show that we’re just normal people doing an unusual job.

It’s also true that science can be difficult to understand, and difficult to explain, so as a scientist it’s a good idea to practice explaining your work and that of other scientists as often as possible!
