I think it depends, for me, we are a international group, we have the computer to do the simulation and the lab to do the experiment. I think the environment is quite nice and friendly.
My work environment is pretty chilled out. There are 10 people in my group who I see everyday, but the reality is that we all work on different projects with a common theme of cryogenics (working at low temperatures). but they are very friendly and we all share problems and help each other with our work. We have our own offices, which I quite like because if I’m having a bad day or just want to concentrate I can just shut the door and focus, but people otherwise people always so hi when they pass or stop in for a chat.
I work in quite a large office full of PhD students, we all work on quite different things, but there are several who might be able to help me if I get stuck on something, which is nice! The physics department here at Heriot-Watt is generally quite relaxed which I really enjoy — it’s a good place to be 🙂
I share an office with one other student and my department is pretty small, about 8 members of staff and about 15 PhD students and post-docs. Its a friendly environment and the students always have coffee breaks and lunch together where we can chat about physics or films or pretty much anything really 🙂
I work in an office with all the PhD students of the group, another post-doc and two technicians. It can be noisy at times but it is a good working environment. I also work at CERN, where I am now. Here I have a much quieter office but have easy access to many people and resources. So all in all I cannot complain.
