      I did GCSE German, and then spent 6 months living and working in Germany after I left school at 18. So I speak passable German in terms of ordering food in a restaurant, holding a conversation with people casually. But I wouldn’t say that I could speak it fluently by any means – I have huge respect for people whose first language isn’t English, who speak enough English to discuss science in it! or even present in English to large audiences.
